College Women’s Basketball Final – Lynchburg 74, Guilford 61

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Lynchburg College’s Charmaine Hairston led the Hornets with 16 points on seven-of-nine shooting as Guilford College dropped a Wednesday evening Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest to Lynchburg, 74-61.

The Quakers (9-2, 2-1 ODAC) opened the first 1:15 of the contest on an 8-0 run as Amy Steller (Advance, N.C./Davie/Pfeiffer) sunk two three-pointers in the run. Lynchburg (9-3, 3-0 ODAC) countered with a 10-2 run of the own to tie the game with 5:47 left in the first quarter. The Hornets elongated their run to 19-2 with 2:58 left in the period, but Guilford cut the deficit to two points with a 7-0 run to close the final 2:28 of the period.

Lynchburg extended the lead back to five points 2:38 into the second quarter, but the Quakers chipped at the lead by holding the Hornets without a field goal for a 3:31 stretch after Lynchburg extended the lead. The Quakers closed within one point twice in the latter portion of the period as the Hornets entered halftime with a three-point lead. Guilford forced 12 Lynchburg turnovers as the Hornets forced nine Guilford miscues. The Quakers shot ten-for-ten from the foul line in the half compared to three-for-four for Lynchburg.

The Quakers kept the lead at three 1:18 into the third quarter, but Lynchburg countered with an 11-3 run over the next 3:23 to extend the lead to 11 points. The run extended to 16-6 with 2:26 left in the quarter as the Hornets’ largest lead grew to 12 points, but Guilford rallied with a 9-3 run to cut the deficit to six at the close of the quarter.

The Quakers cut the Hornets’ lead down to two 1:22 into the fourth quarter, but Lynchburg responded with a 13-0 run over a 3:32 span to post their largest lead of 15 points. The Quakers cut the lead down to nine with 3:10 left, but could cut the deificit no further as Lynchburg claimed the win.

Anais Weatherly (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) led all scorers with 22 points on nine-of-18 shooting while pulling down five rebounds and swiping four steals. Lauren Ramsey added 20 points on 8-of-18 shooting with three steals. Steller represented the final Quakers’ player in double-figure scoring with ten points.

Caroline Naumann added 15 points and seven rebounds while Olivia DeFrancesco produced 13 points and seven rebounds.

Guilford shot 37.9 percent for the contest while Lynchburg shot 51.9 percent. The Quakers finished 12-of-13 (92.3 percent) from the foul line while the Hornets finished 12-of-19 (63.2 percent). Lynchburg won the rebounding battle, 37-28, while holding a 19-7 advantage on points-off-turnovers.

The Quakers continue their stretch of consecutive road games Saturday, traveling to Virginia Wesleyan College for a 2 p.m. ODAC contest.
