College Men’s Basketball Final – Guilford 77, Randolph 60: Marcus Curry (Nothern Guilford HS) going Crazy for Quakers with 21 points/12 rebounds/Win streak reaches 7 straight – w/Photos

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Sophomore Marcus Curry (Greensboro, N.C./Northern Guilford (Bridgewater (Va.)) matched his career high with 21 points and added a personal-best 12 rebounds in Guilford College’s 77-60 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball victory at Randolph College Wednesday night.

Alston Thompson added a season-high 19 points in Guilford’s (12-2, 5-0 ODAC) seventh straight victory and 10th win in 11 outings. The Quakers’ seven-game win streak is their longest since a nine-game skein in 2013-14. The team’s 12-2 start matches the program’s best since 2012-13.

Curry and Thompson both scored 11 first-half points, which helped the Quakers to a 41-33 halftime lead. The sophomore forwards combined to make 10-of-13 shots and collect 10 rebounds in the opening frame.

The WildCats (4-10, 1-4 ODAC) made the second half’s first two baskets to get within 41-37 before Curry re-entered and made three straight buckets to spark an 8-0 run. Randolph cut the deficit to seven a few times in the second half, but drew no closer. The WildCats missed their last nine field goals and did not score in the final three minutes, 37 seconds. Randolph made one-of-13 second-half three-point shots and shot 38.3% from the floor for the game.

Curry sparked a strong effort by Guilford’s bench that saw the Quakers’ reserves outscore their counterparts, 41-19. Rookies Mason Reyer (10 points) and P.J. Stephens (9 points) combined to make five of eight three-pointers off the bench. Thompson, a starter, added seven rebounds, four assists and a block in a solid all-around performance.

Ryan Fields’ 19 points and six boards paced Randolph, which has dropped five of six games. Reid Jacoby added 14 points and a game-high eight assists.
