College Women’s Basketball Final – Guilford 72, Randolph-Macon 59

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Anais Weatherly (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) notched her seventh double-double of the season as the Quakers claimed a Saturday afternoon Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Randolph-Macon College, 72-59.

Weatherly finished with 18 points on seven-of-14 shooting while amassing 13 rebounds. She added four assists and four steals. Heaven Walters (Elkin, N.C./Starmount) posted 13 points on four-of-seven shooting while adding six rebounds and three assists. Amy Steller (Advance, N.C./Davie/Pfeiffer) was the remaining Quakers’ player in double-figure scoring, adding 11 points on four-of-eight shooting.

The Quakers and Yellow Jackets played a tight first quarter as Guilford held to a one-point lead 4:07 into the contest. A 6-0 run over the next 1:16 extended the Quakers’ lead to seven points, their largest lead of the quarter. Randolph-Macon countered with a 7-0 run spanning the next three minutes to tie the game and tied the game a second time before the end of the period.

Six lead changes and one tie highlighted the first 3:37 of the second quarter, but the Quakers held on to the lead for the rest of the period after the sixth lead change. Guilford’s lead extended as large as 10 points in the final minute as the Quakers amassed a 10-2 run over the final 4:52 of the period. Guilford stretched their lead thanks to a 9-0 points-off-turnovers advantage in the period and an 8-0 edge in bench scoring.

The Quakers extended the run to 15-0 in the first 2:22 of the third quarter, enlarging their lead to 17. The Yellow Jackets chipped away at the lead to 10 points at the end of the quarter. Randolph-Macon held a 10-4 edge in the paint in the period while the Quakers held the Yellow Jackets’ bench scoreless for the second consecutive quarter.

The Yellow Jackets staged a comeback, chipping the lead down to seven with 6:09 remaining in the fourth quarter thanks to a 7-0 run over a 2:36 span. The Guilford lead peaked at 11 for the remainder of the period until the end of the game where two late free-throws from Steller capped the lead at 13. The Quakers held an 8-1 edge in second-chance points while the Yellow Jackets claimed a 14-6 edge in the paint for the period.

Kelly Williams led the Yellow Jackets with 16 points on seven-of-eight shooting with 11 rebounds. Amber Lee led the Yellow Jackets in scoring with 17 points with nine rebounds.

The Quakers shot 35.9 percent for the period while Randolph-Macon shot 43.3 percent. Guilford shot 21-for-26 (80.8 percent) from the foul line while Randolph-Macon only shot three-for-nine from the charity stripe.

The Quakers out-rebounded the Yellow Jackets, 43-38, winning a hotly-contested battle on the offensive glass, 23-16. Guilford claimed a 24-7 edge in second-chance points and a 22-14 edge in points-off-turnovers as the Yellow Jackets turned over the basketball 20 times compared to Guilford’s 15. Randolph-Macon earned a 36-26 edge in the paint.

Guilford takes to the road Wednesday, traveling to Hollins University for a 7 p.m. ODAC contest.
