HPU women’s track & field wraps up action at Virginia Tech Invitational

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The High Point University women’s track and field team concluded competition at the Virginia Tech Invitational on Saturday in Blacksburg, Va.

“This was a pretty disappointing weekend overall,” head coach Mike Esposito said. “We have a lot of freshman competing on the team this year and we looked like it here in Blacksburg. We will get back to work and hopefully the results will start to show.”

The team of seniors Cozette Collin and Natalia Ocasio and freshmen Keaton Case and Zoe Geis earned a win in the Distance Medley Relay, finishing the race with a time of 12:52.52 to earn the win.

Also on the track, Freshman Kanajzae Brown turned in a second strong day for the Panthers, finishing in seventh in the 200m with a time of 25.60 while sophomore Jasmyn Gillespie finished in 11th in the 400m with a time of 1:05.64.

In the jumps, senior Erika Bridges tied for eighth in the high jump, clearing 1.59m (5-21Ž2) and freshman Ariel Wilbekin finished 14th in the triple jump with a jump of 10.90m (35-91Ž4).

Junior Makenzi Holmes-DiGiovine led a group of three HPU throwers in the shot put with an 11th place finish. Holmes-DiGiovine’s best throw went 12.15m (39-101Ž2). Allison Torrance finished in 19th with a throw of 10.15m (33-33Ž4) and junior CeAnna Soper placed 24th with a throw of 9.57m (31-43Ž4).

High Point is back in action next weekend when the team heads back to Virginia to compete in the Liberty Combined Events in Lynchburg, Va. The two-day event begins on Friday, Jan. 20.


HPU men’s track & field’s Britton Mann sets school mark at Virginia Tech Invitational

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Sophomore Britton Mann set a new HPU school record in the shot put for the High Point University men’s track & field team as the Panthers competed in the second and final day of the Virginia Tech Invitational on Saturday in Blacksburg, Va.

“We had a couple standout performances for the men this weekend in Britton Mann and James House,” head coach Mike Esposito said. “Britton set a new school record for the shot put and is turning himself into a good thrower with the effort he has put in in the weight room. James had a couple good results this weekend but we know he is capable of even more and look forward to him showing it.”

Mann posted his second ninth-place finish of the weekend, this time in the shot put, with a throw of 15.05m (49-41Ž2). The effort by Mann bested the previous school record of 14.28m set by Jim Wilson in 2015. Freshman Josh Brown finished in 16th in the event with a throw of 12.83m (42-11Ž4).

Junior James House notched a top-10 finish in the 200m, coming in eighth with a time of 22.41 in the event. Sophomore Sean Banda also ran in the 200m and finished 13th with a time of 23.51.

Freshman Pablo Romero Gonzalez and senior Pat Irwin both posted top-10 finishes in the high jump as Romero Gonzalez finished in sixth with a height of 1.96m (6-5) and Irwin finished just behind him in seventh with a height of 1.91m (6-31Ž4).
