College Men’s Basketball Final-Guilford 76, Emory & Henry 59:Quakers make it 9 wins in a-row, with Jaylen Gore(NWG) able to score 6 key points to help Guilford

EMORY, Va. – Carson Long (Pilot Mountain, N.C./East Surry) stroked five three-pointers on the way to a game-high 21 points in Guilford College’s 76-59 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men’s basketball win at Emory & Henry College Wednesday night.

Guilford (14-2, 7-0 ODAC) has won nine straight games, matching the program’s longest winning streak since 2013-14. The Quakers’ 14-2 start marks the program’s best since 2012-13.

Long had 11 first-half points, which helped the Quakers open a 36-31 halftime advantage. His third three-pointer of the half provided the period’s final score. Guilford held a 15-9 rebounding edge and forced nine Wasps’ turnovers that resulted in 15 Quakers’ points.

Two Dominique Henderson (Charlotte, N.C./Mallard Creek (Catawba)) free throws with 11:06 left in regulation opened Guilford’s largest lead (53-42), but Emory & Henry (10-6, 4-3 ODAC) reeled off 11 of the game’s next 15 points. Myles Turner’s three-pointer with eight minutes left trimmed the Quakers’ lead to 57-53.

Guilford answered by Henderson sandwiching three-pointers around a Long trifecta. The three triples triggered the Quakers’ game-ending 19-6 run. The Wasps missed seven of their last nine field-goal attempts.

Henderson finished with 14 points, 10 in the second half. Quakers’ freshman Kyler Gregory (Yadkinville, N.C./Starmount) chipped in 10 points off the bench. He also had six rebounds in his first game back after a three-game absence due to injury. Alston Thompson (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) added nine points and a game-high 12 boards. His efforts helped the Quakers own a commanding 37-20 rebounding edge. Guilford shot over 50 percent from the floor in both halves and 50.9 percent for the game.

Turner joined teammates Chase Branscomb and Clif Conley as Emory & Henry’s top scorers with 12 points apiece.

Coach Tom Palombo’s Quakers host Hampden-Sydney College Saturday (1/21) at 3:00 p.m. in an ODAC contest in the Ragan-Brown Field House.
