$$$$$ I might be turning into ‘Retrieval Andy’ as I bring back an interesting post we had on Elissa Cunane, going to our “Cunane Encounter” at the Chick-fil-A in the Brassfield Center, on Battleground Avenue, back in September of 2016…..$$$$$

Kind of crazy, but I ran into Cunane, Elissa Cunane, tonight at the Brassfield Center Chick-fil-A…

You know Elissa Cunane of Northern Guilford girls basketball fame…She helped lead her team to a (25-8) record as a sophomore last season, in a year where the Nighthawks finished second in the state in the NCHSAA 3-A girls tournament, in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Elissa stands at 6’5 and she can play basketball at a very high skill level…Scoring, rebounds, free throws and blocked shots, she can do it all…One of the most fun parts of her game is just to sit back and watch her shoot free throws…

And the colleges are taking notice….In the past couple of weeks she has talked with Wake Forest(Coach Jen Hoover), Georgia and the South Carolina Gamecocks and coach Dawn Staley are due in town to talk on Friday of this week…(N.C. State and Coach Wes Moore jumped in there too.)

Beyond her basketball game, Elissa is smart and she is now a junior at Northern Guilford and the young Nighthawk is just 15 years old….Makes you think back to when the G-Man Mike Giminski entered Duke, as a 16 year-old freshman back in the late 70’s…..

Had a chance to talk to Elissa and her dad at Chick-fil-A tonight and the craziest thing of all in seeing them there was when I placed my order at Chick-fil-A, the young girl behind the counter asked if I liked basketball and I said yes and she said she did too and that her dad and sister were good players, but she liked the game, but was still trying to master the game…I asked her where she went to school and she said she attended Northern Guilford High School…

I was just about ready to go up and ask the young lady behind the counter if she really liked basketball and since she was in school at Northern Guilford, and if she wanted to really go for a major basketball challenge, she ought to take on Elissa Cunane…I was going to tell her if you want to play some real serious basketball, take on, or challenge Elissa Cunane….

And just a few minutes later, who walks into that Brassfield Center Chick-fil-A, Elissa Cunane and her dad and you talk about one of those miracle moments….I was stunned and I was just thinking the kid/chick behind the counter at Chick-fil-A vs. Elissa Cunane….The big tall chick vs. the smaller chick at Chick-fil-A and you just never know what kind of encounter you may run into at the checkout counter, at Chick-fil-A…

A very interesting encounter of the Cunane Kind with the Cunane kid in the House at the Chick-fil-A on Battleground, at the Brassfield Center…

Pretty neat huh, and Elissa Cunane always projected that key word when you would ask her about the Big Game and her basketball experiences….”What was the experience like”, we would ask Elissa and she would reply, “Exhilarating”…..

Like I told you the kid is smart and she is a 15 year-old, exhilarating young basketball player, that will make her Nighthawks and her dad proud this season and she will one day make a Division I women’s college basketball program very proud too….

  1. OMG!!! I’m so happy for Elissa and her family. Her parents are great and she deserves this moment. I’m a Duke fan but I will definitely be wearing red and rooting for her. I wish you nothing but the best.

  2. Super mature decision to value education as much/more than sports!! She knows what she wants to do in life and NC State offers the best path for that. Also, very mature to make decision now instead of long drawn out recruitment that becomes a distraction for herself and more importantly her team. Maybe some of her fellow gaters will follow her example, of being mature and selfless and humble!!!
(She has set a great example.)

Great kid and great things are in store for her!!

  3. I love Elissa as player and person. I have met her dad many times and it’s great that she gets good family support like many of the other players. However I just wanted to throw a snowball at “congrats”. Those are some of the dumbest comments I have ever heard. Nearly every girl that I know has made a decision on their college based on what is best for their style as play combined with the type of education route that they wanted to follow. NC State is a great school but don’t think they won’t work her like a dog in that program any less or more than UNCG, NC A&T, Wake Forest or App State. If State offers the best route, then outstanding for her to get this opportunity at a place that she may already love. Most players never have that option. Making that decision now has nothing to do with being more mature than other players. The State program is on the rise, the coach is doing well and has a prior history with the school, and plus it is only 1 hour from home. Other players may not have a stable coaching situation (aka UNCG coach fired last year, UNC coach still in hot water from program issues, Wake coach is having programs with getting into NCAA tournament, and the App State coach was let go 2 years ago). Thus, if you commit 2 years in advance and your coach is fired in your senior year, then you may want to get recruited again. For some players it is best to commit during your senior for many great reasons. Players are not distracted nor their teammates from the recruiting process for girls. There is no player in this city that will ever be recruited harder than boys such as Harry Giles and it did not distract from his team. In fact, I would suggest that it helps other players looking to get more attention from coaches. Once you commit, the coaches stop showing up. This young lady will do well with the State program and I hope future players will find equally good playing homes but don’t pre-judge their decisions as it relates to anyone else’s choice.

  4. Knowing a lot of kids from the area and having kids of my own that don’t play sports but they follow a lot of athletes on social media, pretty sure congrats is throwing darts at the kids who post every single college visit on social media, which comes across as “bragging”, which definitely would be a distraction to teammates. Regardless, not wanting to get in the middle of a silly catfight here, congrats to Cunane, who apparently wants to be a veterinarian and NC is one of the top schools in the south for that.
