BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The High Point University women’s basketball team went on the road to Campbell on Tuesday night took a 58-33 setback in Gore Arena.
The Panthers (5-13, 3-4) trailed by nine at the half, but couldn’t get any closer as the Camels’ (14-4, 6-1) nation-leading defense made everything difficult for their visitors.
“All the credit goes to Campbell because they executed their gameplan and defended well tonight,” head coach DeUnna Hendrix said. “We just didn’t attack the way we wanted to and I never felt like we were confident in what we were doing. They’re a good defensive team, no doubt, but I thought coming into this game we had reached a place where we were confident in our execution and we didn’t show that tonight.”
Sophomore Shea Morgan paced the HPU offense with nine points on 4-of-6 shooting. Similarly, redshirt-sophomore Kennedy Currie tallied six points and five rebounds while knocking down 3-of-5 field goal attempts.
Despite not having her typical scoring night, senior Kaylah Keys recorded two career milestones on the night. The Memphis, Tenn. native racked up three assists to move past Tayler Tremblay and into fifth on HPU’s Division I assists list. Likewise, her three steals pushed her into fourth in career steals above Shamia Brown.
On the glass, Campbell posted a 39-30 edge as sophomore Emma Bockrath led the Panthers with seven boards.
Offensively, the Panthers were limited to a season-low 33 points on just 14-of-48 shooting (29.2 percent). On the other end, the Camels hit 23-of-53 (43.3 percent) while earning a 7-1 edge in three-pointers.
Points were hard to come by early as the Camels built a 5-0 lead through the first three minutes. However, the Panthers hit their final five shots of the first quarter before Keys drilled a three to make it 18-17 with 7:08 on the second-quarter clock.
However, the Camels’ defense held HPU scoreless for the next 5:30 while building a 24-17 edge. From there, junior Kat Harris and freshman Camryn Brown each added baskets in the final two minutes, but Campbell responded to take a 30-21 advantage into the break.
After halftime, the Camels’ country’s top defense continued to control the tempo as the lead swelled to 16, 37-21 with five minutes left in the third. Bockrath, though, canned a corner jumper to spark a 6-0 run that pulled the Panthers within 10 at 37-27 at the 3:44 mark.
But the Camels closed the period with an 8-2 run to take a 45-29 lead into the final frame as they closed out a 58-33 victory.
The Purple & White are back at home on Sunday at 1 p.m. to host Presbyterian in a nationally televised contest on the American Sports Network.
