GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Elon University men’s tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Furman at Mickel Tennis Center on Thursday, Jan. 26, to snap a five-match winning streak against the Paladins that dated back to 2013.
Felipe Osses-Konig picked up his first singles victory of the season and Petar Tomic got things going in singles with a quick victory at No. 4, but the Phoenix couldn’t recover from dropping the doubles point and fell to 1-3 on the season while Furman earned its first win to move to 1-2.
The Rundown
In doubles action, Elon struggled with Neal Port and Salvador Mijares – ranked No. 42 in the country – falling to Clarke Wilson and Trevor Croyder 6-1. Furman then claimed the point with a 6-2 win at No. 1. Though Tomic and Chris Humphreys put up a solid fight at No. 3, the duo ultimately fell 6-4.
As singles commenced, Tomic made quick work of Jake Munns at No. 4 in winning 6-2, 6-2 to even the match at 1-1. Furman responded, though, in taking wins at No. 6 and No. 2 to go up 3-1.
Osses-Konig battled three sets against Alex Steryous and earned the 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 victory at No. 5 to cut the Furman lead in half and make it 3-2, but Felipe Sarrasague dropped a tough three-setter at No. 1 to Adam Steryous by the score of 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 and Furman closed the match with Wilson winning 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 at No. 3.

Elon will take time off before returning to the courts again next Saturday, Feb. 4, at VCU. First serve against the Rams is set for 11 a.m. in Richmond. The following day, the Phoenix will close the six-match road swing to open the season with a 1 p.m. match in Norfolk, Va., against Old Dominion.
