Elon Phoenix Track and Field to Compete at Camel City Invitational

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s track and field team heads to the prestigious Camel City Invitational this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 3-4, inside the JDL Fast Track Facility in Winston-Salem, N.C. The meet will begin on Friday at 1 p.m. and resumes its final day on Saturday morning at 9 a.m.

“We’re definitely excited about this meet,” said Elon Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mark Elliston. “It’s just another step in the process of the season as we move on into the middle portion of our schedule. With the way training has been going well over the past few days, I think everyone is ready to step up their game a bit. I’m really looking forward to some of the athletes’ performances this weekend.”

Setting the Stage
The Camel City Invitational will feature a number of nationally ranked programs and athletes in competition. The meet will also include a number of athletes from the professional ranks prior to the Camel City Elite meet later Saturday evening.

Elon Prelims
• The Phoenix is scheduled to have 22 athletes in competition on Friday and Saturday. Elon will also have seven members from the men’s cross country team also scheduled to race.
• Elon currently has three athletes and its distance medley relay team that have qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Indoor Championships. Senior Kimberly Johansen has qualified for both the one-mile and 1,000-meters while Bre’anna Warren and Bryanna Hames are in the top-22 in the of performance list in the shot put.
• Johansen broke her own school-record in the 1,000-meters last Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Darius Dixon Invitational. The Chelmsford, England, native clocked a 2:49.22 in the race and finished second overall.
• Hames moved into second on the program’s performance list in the indoor shot put after the Charlotte, N.C., native set a new personal-record with a heave of 46′ 4.75″ (14.14m) to win the event last week at the Darius Dixon Invitational. She became the third member in program history to break the 14-meter barrier.
• Senior thrower Briana O’Grady also continued to push her way upward on the program’s performance list in the weight throw. The South Kingstown, R.I., native set a new personal-record in the event with a toss of 51’ 5.75” (15.69m), moving to third all-time on the school’s all-time performance list.

Last Time Out
The Phoenix last competed at the Darius Dixon Invitational at Liberty University on Jan. 27-28. Among some of the notable performers at the meet outside of Hames, Johansen and O’Grady was rookie Melissa Anastasakis, who ran the third-fastest time in school history in the 1,000-meters and was fourth overall with her time of 2:59.37.

In the triple jump, Carrie Abraham was third overall with a leap of 38′ 4.75″ (11.70m). Jayna Coyle and Melody Burke were fifth and sixth with marks of 37′ 6″ (11.43m) and 37′ 3.25″ (11.36m), respectively.

Shelby Cuddeback set a new meet and facility record in the 3,000-meters with her new personal-best time of 9:57.68 to win the race. Elon took the first four spots of the race with Coralea Geraniotis coming in second with her time of 9:59.60, Brigid Brennan was third at 10:07.69 while Sophia Tasselmyer rounded out the top four with her time of 10:17.35.

Lauren Brzozowski was Elon’s top finisher in the 200-meters with a time of 25.39 in 12th overall. In the 400-meter dash, Desiree Ross was fourth with her time of 57.53 while Brzozowski joined her in the top-10 with a 58.64. Emily Dixon established a new personal-best in the 60-meter hurdles as the Bath, England, native clocked a 8.93 in the semi-final round.

Elon is scheduled to compete next at the JDL Team Challenge on Thursday, Feb. 9, back inside the JDL Fast Track Complex.
