College Men’s Basketball Final – Guilford 68, Washington and Lee 66

LEXINGTON, Va. – Carson Long’s (Pilot Mountain, N.C./East Surry) three-pointer with 1.1 seconds left in regulation lifted visiting Guilford College to a 68-66 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men’s basketball victory at Washington and Lee University Saturday.

Despite missing his first six shots from beyond the arc, the sophomore forward delivered in the final minute to send the Quakers (18-3, 11-1 ODAC) to their fourth straight win and their 13th victory in 14 games. Guilford is off to its best ODAC start in school history and shares the top spot in the league standings with Randolph-Macon College (15-6, 11-1 ODAC).

The lead changed hands 12 times and the score was tied four times in the tight contest. The Generals trimmed a 14-point, first-half deficit to four by halftime and tied the score midway through the second half on an Andy Kleinlein three-pointer. Washington and Lee (8-13, 4-8 ODAC) inched ahead and opened a 59-54 cushion with 5:19 left in regulation.

Guilford rallied with six straight points and regained a 60-59 margin with less than three minutes to play. The lead changed six times in the next two minutes as the teams traded baskets. Kleinlein’s jumper with 66 ticks left gave the Generals a 66-65 lead. Guilford’s Alston Thompson missed a shot with 42 seconds left on the ensuing possession, but Washington and Lee failed to capitalize as Kleinlein’s three-pointer rimmed out with 23 second remaining. Guilford’s Dominique Henderson secured the rebound. The Quakers called a timeout with 11 seconds left to set up Long’s winning shot, which followed a series of passes around the perimeter.

Following another Quakers’ timeout, Guilford’s Zachary Houston preserved the win by stealing Roy McMillan’s inbounds pass near midcourt as time expired.

Long finished with a game-high 15 points. He made six-of-seven two-point field goals, but just the one trifecta in seven three-point attempts. Thompson also scored 15 points (14 in the second half) and grabbed a game-high 12 boards for his third double-double of the season. Henderson added 11 points, as did P.J. Stephens, which marked the rookie’s career high. Houston, who hit a clutch three with 1:32 left, compiled six points, plus five steals and seven assists, both game highs.

Kleinlein netted his 1,000th career point in the game and led the Generals with 14 points. McMillan contributed 13 points and five boards off the bench. Devin Kearns also scored 13 points, thanks to six-of-12 field-goals shooting. Clayton Murtha notched 12 markers and a club-best eight rebounds.

Coach Tom Palombo’s Quakers visit Roanoke College Wednesday (2/8) for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
