College Women’s Basketball Final – Guilford 59, Hollins 32

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Lauren Ramsey (Lexington, N.C/North Davidson) led the Quakers with ten points as Guilford claimed a Wednesday evening Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Hollins University, 59-32.

Hollins (4-17, 0-13 ODAC) claimed a 5-4 lead up until the 3:31 mark of the first quarter when Anais Weatherly (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) sunk a jumper to claim the lead. The Quakers (18-3, 11-2 ODAC) closed the period with one more basket in the period as the Quakers made four field goals compared to two for Hollins.

Guilford capped an 8-0 run 3:39 into the second quarter to claim a seven-point lead. Guilford’s lead grew as large as nine points as Hollins’ defense held the Quakers without a field for a 4:45 stretch in the latter part of the period to chop the lead down as low as five points.

The Quakers produced a 9-0 run over a 3:31 stretch early in the third quarter as Guilford’s lead ballooned as large as 16 in the period. Guilford claimed a 12-6 edge in the paint for the quarter while claiming a 9-1 advantage in points-off-turnovers. The Quakers shot 53.8 percent in the period while Hollins shot 46.2 percent.

Guilford dominated the fourth quarter as they held a 14-0 edge in the paint for the period. Hollins chipped the lead down to 10 points 2:05 into the period, but the Quakers produced a 9-0 run spanning a 4:34 stretch in the period to grow the lead as large as 19 points. The run grew to 18-1 to conclude the contest as the Quakers shot 57.1 percent for the fourth quarter compared to Hollins’ 7.7 percent on one field goal.

Ramsey shot four-of-eight from the field and added five rebounds and three assists to her ten-point total. Jordyn Brown came off the bench to score nine points on four-of-six shooting in 13 minutes while pulling down five rebounds. Jordyn Richardson (Kernersville, N.C./Mount Tabor/Catawba) and Heaven Walters (Elkin, N.C./Starmount) each chipped in seven points a piece as nine different Quakers tallied four or more points.

Jewellanna Parfitt led all scorers with 13 points on four-of-12 shooting while tallying five steals. Sally Sroge added 12 points on five-of-nine shooting.

The Quakers finished the contest shooting 40.4 percent from the field while Hollins finished shooting 24 percent. The Quakers out-rebounded Hollins, 45-25, on the power of 16 offensive rebounds. The Quakers earned a decisive 14-0 advantage in fast break points and a 40-10 advantage in the paint. Guilford’s bench dominated Hollins’ reserves, 30-0, and the Quakers claimed a 15-3 edge in points-off-turnovers.

The Quakers close out their regular season home schedule Saturday, facing Virginia Wesleyan College for a 2 p.m. ODAC contest on the team’s Senior Day.
