GREENSBORO, N.C. – Dominique Henderson and Carson Long scored 14 points apiece in Guilford College’s 67-53 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball victory over league-leading Randolph-Macon College Saturday afternoon.

Guilford is ranked 22nd in this week’s D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll and first in the NCAA Division III South Region Rankings. The Yellow Jackets are ranked seventh in the region.

The Quakers (19-4, 12-2 ODAC) held the Yellow Jackets (16-7, 12-2 ODAC) to a season-low 33.3 percent shooting from the floor to win the lone regular-season meeting between the two teams. The triumph moved Guilford into a share of first place atop the league standings with Randolph-Macon. Both squads have two games left in the regular season.
Montrese Adams’ three-pointer gave the Yellow Jackets a 10-9 lead six minutes into a game that had a playoff feel. The Quakers reeled off the next seven points and took the lead for good. Guilford got quality first-half minutes off the bench from Kyler Gregory, Jarrod Rogers and Marcus Curry, who played in his first game in a month due to an injury. The trio accounted nine of Guilford’s 12 points over a 14-4 run capped by a Carson Long three-pointer to open a 23-14 lead.

While Randolph-Macon struggled to find the basket, Guilford shot over 52 percent from the floor in the first half, and also made 13-of-16 free throws. The Yellow Jackets committed their seventh team foul with five minutes left in the half, and Guilford knocked down the shots to pad its lead, which grew to 40-25 by halftime.

Two of the top defensive teams in Division III basketball slugged it out in the second half, with neither team shooting over 30 percent from the floor. The Quakers turned the ball over nine times in the second half, but slowly increased its lead with strong defense and rebounding. Henderson and Long combined for 13 second-half points, offsetting the 11 scored by Randolph-Macon’s Michael Taylor.

Eventually the clock also became Randolph-Macon’s rival and the Yellow Jackets found themselves down 20 with 5:31 to play. It tried a press, followed by fouling, but couldn’t generate any substantive offense. The Quakers sealed the win by making eight of 12 free throws in the final three minutes. They made a season-high 26 shots from the stripe in 35 attempts for the game.

Guilford’s Alston Thompson recorded his team-leading fourth double-double with 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. He scored eight first-half points, which helped Guilford build its lead. Zachary Houston had his normal line of three points, seven rebounds, four assists and five steals in 34 minutes. The Quakers won the battle of the boards for the 22nd time in 23 games, 41-36.

Taylor was Randolph-Macon’s long double-figure scorer with a game-high 18 points. Daniel Noe finished with eight. Jermaine Johnson and Grayson Midulla both scored seven points and shared team-high honors with five boards apiece.
Coach Tom Palombo’s charges host Emory & Henry College Wednesday (2/15) in their final regular-season home game. The Quakers’ three seniors will be honored prior to the 7:00 p.m. ODAC contest.
