GREENSBORO, N.C. – Kelsey McAnnally scored two goals and two assists in visiting Berry College’s 8-7 women’s lacrosse win at Guilford College Sunday.
McAnnally, a senior attacker, tallied twice in the second half, with her second score capping a 3-0 Vikings’ spurt. The Quakers battled back from a 4-2 halftime deficit on goals by Amanda Dionne and Summer Fowler that tied the score for the third and final time.
The teams traded possessions with Guilford goalie Sammi Milbourn delivering some big saves, before McAnnally got on the board with a free-position goal with 19:55 remaining. Savannah McKenzie scored in transition from Ashley Merritt less than three minutes later, before McAnnally capped the decisive run with a strong drive through two defenders that resulted in her second goal.
The Quakers stormed back as Dionne and Abigail Horchar scored less than two minutes apart to make it a 7-6 contest. After a Vikings’ timeout, Berry won the ensuing draw and Guilford starting defender Amber Dubois left the game after collecting her second yellow card of the day. While the Quakers successfully killed off the ensuing power play and got another free-position save from Milbourn, Berry’s Keiley Ayers eventually broke free and scored an unassisted goal with 4:01 left to open an 8-6 lead.
Guilford got back to within 8-7 when Demming Carlow earned a free-position and sent a quick pass to Dionne, who collected her fifth score of the day. The Quakers won the ensuing draw, but turned the ball over with a minute left. A yellow card on Carlow sent the senior off and left Guilford a player down for the final minute. The teams traded possession before Berry won the ball and ran out the clock to claim the narrow victory.
McAnnally and Ayers both scored twice to lead the Vikings’ six different goal scorers. Berry held a 24-15 edge in shots and picked up 22 of the game’s 39 ground balls. Ella Makin made seven saves in goal McKenzie and Shadae Williams picked up four ground balls apiece.
Dionne’s five goals paced the Quakers’ offense. She also won five draw controls. Fowler contributed a goal and an assist, plus two draws, two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Madison Iandoli had an assist and a game-best five pickups in her first college contest. Milbourn finished with eight saves and four ground balls in goal.
