Men’s College Basketball Final – Emory & Henry 65, Guilford 60

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Myles Turner (Richmond, Va./Thomas Dale) scored 11 of his team-high 16 points in the second half of Emory & Henry College’s 65-60 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win at Guilford College Wednesday night.

The Wasps (17-7, 11-4 ODAC), ranked eighth in the NCAA Division III South Region Rankings released earlier today, made 17-of-21 free throws to upend the Quakers (19-5, 12-3 ODAC), ranked first in the same poll. Guilford, which entered the game tied atop the ODAC standings, shot 11-of-22 from the foul line.

The Quakers rode the momentum of a pregame ceremony honoring the team’s three seniors and raced to a 10-point first-half lead before the Wasps rallied. Clif Conley netted all nine of his points off the bench in the opening frame, which saw Emory & Henry take a 30-28 halftime lead. His four-point play highlighted a 16-4 Wasps’ run that erased a 12-2 deficit.

The lead changed hands 10 times in a tightly contested second half before Emory & Henry reeled off eight-straight points midway through the period. Guilford rallied to within three points on four separate occasions, including the last time with four seconds left in regulation, but Turner often had an answer. The senior guard drained a three-pointer and made all six free throws in the game’s final six minutes.

Aaron Ferguson delivered 12 points, five boards and three assists off the bench for Emory & Henry. He, plus teammates Brandon Self (4 points, 4 rebounds) and Chase Branscomb (3 points, 9 rebounds) helped the Wasps to an 18-16 edge in interior scoring and a 37-35 rebounding advantage. Emory & Henry became just the second team to outrebound Guilford this season.

The Quakers’ Carson Long led all scorers with 17 points, thanks to five-of-nine three-point shooting. His three-pointer with four seconds left made it a 63-60 game before Turner iced the win with two free throws. Guilford’s Jarrod Rogers (Trinity, N.C./Archdale) added 10 points off the bench, eight in the second half. Teammate Marcus Curry (Greensboro, N.C./Northern Guilford (Bridgewater)) delivered seven points off the bench.

Guilford closes the regular season Saturday (2/18) at Bridgewater College. The Quakers earned a first-round bye to the ODAC Tournament and open play in the quarterfinals February 24 in Salem, Va.
