Elon Men’s Tennis Extends Home Winning Streak, Defeating USC Upstate 6-1

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s tennis team clinched the doubles point and won four singles matches in straight sets to claim a 6-1 victory over USC Upstate on Friday, Feb. 17, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

Alex Koniaev led the way with a 2-0 mark, including a doubles-clinching win with Maria Paraja. She also won her singles match at No. 5 singles to push the maroon and gold’s lead to 6-0. Elon improves to 6-3 with the win and USC Upstate falls to 1-8 overall.

“The team competed very well today and played well, especially in doubles,” head coach Elizabeth Anderson said. “We are looking forward to a great match against a strong Davidson team tomorrow. We hope to get a great crowd at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center for our match.”

THE HIGHLIGHTS
In doubles play, Elon clinched the point with a 6-2 victory on court No. 1 after Suzanne Zenoni and Kirsten Ward cruised to a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles. Maria Paraja and Koniaev clinched the point with at 6-2 win. Erica Braschi and Olivia Lucas were leading 5-3 at No. 3 before the point was clinched.

Paraja made quick work of the Spartans’ Eduarda Ferreira 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 singles and Sofia Edo won her fifth-straight match of the season with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Morgan Dodd at No. 6.

Zenoni clinched the match on court No. 2 with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Vale Zarama. Erica Braschi followed by winning 6-0, 6-0 at the top singles position. Koniaev won 10-8 in a third-set tiebreaker for the Phoenix’s sixth point of the match.

Edo is a perfect 5-0 this season at No. 6 singles. The Phoenix improves to 4-0 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
