College Baseball Final – Guilford 9, Bluefield State 1

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Rocco Wilcox went three-for-three with two triples and scored five times as Guilford College downed visiting Bluefield State, 9-1, on Saturday afternoon at McBane Field.

The Quakers improved to 5-2 and the NCAA DIvision II Big Blues fell to 1-4.

Guilford starting pitcher John Todd (2-0) tossed seven strong innings and earned the win. He scattered seven hits, allowed one run, struck out five and allowed one walk. Logan Jones and Brody Holloman both threw a scoreless inning in relief for the home team.

The Quakers scored twice in the first inning for all the runs they would need. Josh Shepherd led off with an infield single and was brought home on a hit by Joe Metts. Stewart Laws added an RBI single to record an unearned run.

Shepherd, Metts and Mitchell Stumpo all had two hits in the contest. The Quakers had 13 hits to BSC’s eight.

Guilford batted around and broke the game open with four runs on four hits in the third inning.

Bluefield State tallied its lone run in the seventh inning. With bases loaded, Billy O’Hara reached on a catcher’s interference, which scored Drew D’Angelo from third base.

Peyton Durham went two-of-three to lead the Big Blues. Tanner Muovich (0-1) took the loss on the hill for BSC. He allowed seven runs–five of which were earned–threw one strikeout, and allowed two walks.

Guilford hosts Averett University on Sunday. First pitch is 1 p.m. at McBane Field.
