College Indoor Track and Field Results – Guilford’s Fanney Breaks Two School Records at UCS Invitational

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Guilford College’s Sommer Fanney (Burlington, N.C./Williams) broke two schools records in Saturday’s UCS Invitational at the JDL Fast Track. The meet featured runners from all NCAA Divisions, including Power Five conference schools and members of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC).

Fanney broke her own 800 meter run record by 3.67 seconds with a time of 2:27.67. The time placed 21st overall and fourth among ODAC participants. Fanney also broke the six-year old mile run record by 2.87 seconds. She placed 34th in a Division I heavy field with a time of 5:32.05. The time was the fourth-best ODAC time in the race.

Becca Benfield came .1 meter away from tying her own school record set last week in the shot put, earning a 14th-place finish. She finished with a mark of 10.50 meters, good for third among ODAC participants.

Jeremiah Hedrick (Sedalia, N.C./Southern Guilford) led the men with strong showing in both the long jump and the triple jump. Hedrick placed 11th in the long jump with a mark of 6.11 meters, which was good for third among ODAC athletes. Hedrick bumped his way into Guilford’s top eight all-time marks in the triple jump, grabbing the eighth-best mark in school history by .03 meters. He finished with a mark of 12.56 meters, which earned him seventh place and was the top ODAC mark in the competition.

Jonny Sumner garnered the fifth-best ODAC 400 meter finish in a 31st-place finish with a time of 54.04 seconds. He picked up the ninth-best 200 meter dash time among ODAC participants with a time of 24.84, beating teammate Nick Jones (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford/Randolph-Macon) by just .01 seconds.

The Quaker wrap up regularly-schedule indoor meets, as a team, next Sunday at the ODAC Championships at Roanoke College.
