Elon Men’s Tennis Tops James Madison for Third Straight Victory

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University men’s tennis team began its weekend back-to-back by defeating James Madison 4-3 on Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

The Phoenix improves to 4-5 on the season with the win and James Madison drops to 3-4. Elon has now won three straight matches, all of which have been played at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

The Highlights
The Phoenix won matches on all three doubles courts to secure the doubles point and a 1-0 lead. Chris Humphreys and Petar Tomic clinched the point with a 6-3 victory, their third straight win and first of the season at the No. 1 position.

Salvador Mijares and Neal Port got things started with a 6-2 victory over Brett Moorhead and Damon Roberts. Felipe Sarrasague and Taylor Foote added a 6-4 victory on court No. 2 after the point had been decided.

The Phoenix picked up victories on each of the top three singles courts. Sarrasague won his third straight match, a 6-2, 6-3 decision against Theophile Lanthiez.

Tomic’s 6-4, 6-4 victory over Damon Roberts extended Elon’s lead to 3-0. Tomic has now won three straight singles matches.

After Tate Steinour added a point for James Madison with a win at No. 6 singles, Mijares clinched the decisive fourth point in winning 6-4, 6-1 over Sebastian Salinas on court No. 2.

The Dukes went on to win the remaining matches on court Nos. 4 and 5 after the match had been decided. Paul Mendoza beat Felipe Osses-Konig in straight sets on court No. 4 and Brett Moorhead won in a third-set super tiebreaker over Humphreys at the No. 5 position.

– The doubles duo of Chris Humphreys and Petar Tomic extended its winning streak to three matches with a 6-3 victory on court No. 1. The win was the pairing’s first at the top doubles position this season.
– Felipe Sarrasague and Petar Tomic extended their respective singles winning streaks to three matches with victories against the Dukes.
