Elon Women’s Tennis Falls at No. 3 North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Elon University women’s tennis team fell to the No. 3-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels, 7-0, on Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 21, at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.

FINAL RESULTS

Freshman Sofia Edo was the highlight in singles action for the Phoenix during the setback, forcing a third-set tiebreaker at the No. 6 singles position against Cassandra Vazquez. After falling in the first set 6-3, Edo answered with a 7-5 win in the second set to force a third set tiebreaker. Vazquez would hold on winning the tiebreak 10-6 to win the match.

HIGHLIGHTS
North Carolina clinched the doubles point with victories on courts one and two to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The third doubles match went unfinished with the Tar Heels leading 5-3.

UNC took the first singles point as No. 19-ranked Jessie Aney defeated Suzanne Zenoni, 6-0, 6-2 on the second court. Olivia Lucas put up a good battle at the No. 3 position against No. 40 Alexa Graham, but fell 6-4, 6-2 and UNC took a 3-0 lead.

After dropping her first set at the No. 4 position, Maria Paraja built a 4-1 lead in her second set, but ended up falling to No. 70-ranked Makenna Jones, 6-0, 6-4, and the Tar Heels clinched the match.

Kirsten Ward put up a great fight at the No. 5 position, taking a 4-1 lead in her second set, but fell in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Erica Braschi fell in her match on the top court against the No. 2-ranked singles player Hayley Carter, keeping both sets close in a 6-2, 6-3 loss.

Edo’s contest on the bottom court ended the match as she lost in a third-set tiebreaker.
