College Men’s Lacrosse Final – Guilford 14, Southern Virginia 4

BUENA VISTA, Va. – Zach Berkowitz and Aswan Bland scored four goals apiece in Guilford College’s 14-4 men’s lacrosse victory at Southern Virginia University Saturday. Berkowitz also had two assists for a game-high six points in the Quakers’ (2-1) second straight win.

Berkowitz scored three times in the second quarter and Bland had three straight scores late in the third quarter into the fourth. The pair helped Guilford break open a 1-1 game after the opening quarter into an 11-3 Quakers’ rout after three quarters. Three straight extra-man goals in the final period opened a 14-3 margin before the Knights (1-1) Brady Cook tallied the game’s final goal with 5:16 left in the contest.

Guilford enjoyed a dominant 46-27 edge in shots and killed off all three man-down situations. Alex Ramey won 10-of-16 face-offs and picked up a team-best four ground balls. Nick Damiano scored twice and Derek Spaulding added two goals and two assists for a career-high four points. Parker Styles played all but four minutes and made all eight of Guilford’s saves in goal. Defenseman Will Forrestal compiled an assist, three caused turnovers and two ground balls.

Shawn Lamb led Southern Virginia with two goals and an assist. Cook finished with two points on a goal and an assist. Goalie Carson Franklin made eight saves and shared game-high honors with five ground balls.
