The #3 seeded Cowboys of Southwest played hosts to the # 12 seeded Page Pirates in the 3rd round of the State 4A Playoffs. Page earned their spot here with a first round victory over the 24th seed Ardrey Kell 66-49, then a win over 7th seeded Lake Norman 66-53. The Cowboys got here with a convincing win over the 32nd seed Mooresville 88-38 followed by a tough win over Independence 67-64.

These two Guilford County schools faced each other in the regular season. It was an overwhelming victory for the Cowboys 83-51 back in mid-December. This is the postseason however, and both teams were still fighting to survive and advance.

The Cowboys wasted no time taking control of this contest scoring the opening 5 points to be up 5-0 at the 6:30 mark. The Pirates got on the board at 5-2 with 6:10 to play. Another quick spurt made it 9-2. A made free throw for Page stopped the run, but a three pointer made it 12-3 at the 4:55 mark. The Pirates came down and stopped the run at 12-5, but in less than a blink it was 22-5. The rest of the frame the Pirates fought hard and managed to keep the Cowboys within in reason as the opening stanza closed at 27-14.

The second quarter was a slower more physical frame as foul trouble started to pile up on the hosts. The teams traded baskets and spurts as the Pirates refused to give up. After a tough 8 minutes the score was 42-27 in favor of the Cowboys.

The third quarter opened up with the Pirates still fighting hard as they got the game within striking distance by the 4:41 mark with the Cowboy lead down to 44-33. A Southwest timeout proved to be the right move as they then proceeded to go on another 8-0 spurt to get it back to 52-33 forcing a timeout by the visitors. Southwest kept the control and following a brief scuffle the frame ended with the Pirates free-throws to trim the lead to 64-42.

The final frame was just as physical as the rest of the game, but it was still too much Cowboys as they executed and built the lead back up and closed out a strong 84-58 victory in the sweet sixteen to become Sectional Champions for the second straight season.

The Pirates were led by Jahlen Smith with 31 points. Southwest once again had an excellent team effort that placed 6 players in double figures. Featuring: Kameron Langley with (13, 8 Asts, 6 Rebs, 3 Stls), Cooper Cunningham with (13, 5 Rebs, Ast, Stl), Keyshaun Langley with (13, 4 Rebs, 3 Stls, Blk), Dezmond Woods with (12, 4 Rebs, 2 Asts), Kobe Langley with (11, 2 Rebs, 2 Asts), and Christian Martin with (11, 6 Rebs, 2 Asts). The Cowboys survive and advance to host Hoke County on Tuesday night at 7pm.
