College Baseball Final – Guilford 8, Greensboro 5

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College scored five unearned runs in a rain-delayed fourth inning and Logan Jones threw five innings of three-hit relief in the Quakers’ 8-5 comeback baseball win over Greensboro College Saturday.

Guilford’s (8-3) sixth win in seven games evens the three-game weekend series between the crosstown rivals. Greensboro (7-4) pulled out a 4-3 win over Guilford in Friday’s opener at Yadkin Bank Park. The rubber match of the three-game set is Sunday (2/26) at the Leonard Recreation Center.

After Guilford’s Mitchell Stumpo opened the game’s scoring with a lead-off homer in the second inning, Greensboro answered with three runs in the top of the third inning off of Guilford starter Ty Walser. Jimmy Short’s two-run single up the middle with one out made it a 3-1 Pride advantage.

Stumpo reached on an error to start the Guilford fourth inning and took second on Sammy Gerald’s one-out single. A thunderstorm delayed the game for nearly an hour before Ryan Hill reached on a fielder’s choice when second baseman Jacob Rodriguez’s relay throw on Hill’s double-play ball sailed past first base. Stump scored, Hill took second and came across on a Josh Shepherd single, which tied the game. Trevor Denton added an RBI inning in the frame and two Quakers scored on wild pitches.

Jones relieved Walser in the fifth with a 6-3 lead. Greensboro plated an unearned run in the inning, but Jones faced the minimum nine batters over the next three innings before Greensboro’s Hunter Curtis tripled in Braedon Jewett, who reached on a two-out walk. The senior right-hander scattered three hits, fanned three and walked one in the longest outing of his career.

Stumpo, Denton and Rocco Wilcox had two hits apiece for Guilford, which scored five unearned runs and three times off of wild pitches.

Short, Curtis and Zach Neumeister had two hits apiece for Greensboro. Murray gave up six runs, only one of which was earned, but also yielded four walks and six hits.
