HPU Women’s Golf Finishes First-Round Action at Kiawah Island

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. — The High Point University women’s golf team opened up its spring season Sunday at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic. The Panthers shot 20-over 308 at the Oak Point Golf Club (Par 72 – 5,941 yards) and sit in in a tie for 22nd out of 43 schools after the first of three rounds.

“I was really pleased with the way we came out of the gate today, but we have some things to clean up if we want to really compete against this field,” HPU head coach Alexis Bennett said. “We took advantage of some of the easier holes out there, but made a couple of high numbers that really hurt us. With the fall under our belts, I was very excited to see the confidence and poise the girls displayed today and am looking forward to moving up the leaderboard tomorrow.”

Leading the way for the Panthers was junior Cayla Smith, who is tied for 39th after shooting 2-over 74 with birdies on No. 4 and No. 8. Freshman Tonrak Tasaso shot 3-over 75 with four birdies.

Freshman Samantha Vodry (9-over 81) had the highlight hole of the day for the Panthers with an eagle on No. 4. Rounding out the scoring four for the Panthers was senior Danielle Fuss, who shot 6-over 78.

Rounding out the scoring for the Panthers was sophomore Devi Meyers, who shot 13-over 85.

The second round is Monday with action for the Panthers starting at 9:54 a.m. and the tournament concludes on Tuesday.
