HPU Women’s Golf Posts School Record in Final Round at Kiawah Island

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C.—The High Point University women’s golf team set a school-record in the final round of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic, finishing in a tie for 21st-place Tuesday (Feb. 28) at the Osprey Point Golf Club (Par 72 – 5,964 yards) in Kiawah Island, S.C.

The Panthers shot 5-over (293) in the final round, which is the lowest round against par in program history. HPU had previously recorded four rounds at 6-over. The 293 strokes for the Panthers in the final round is the second-lowest tally in school history.

For the tournament, the Panthers finished in a tie for 21st-place at 46-over. With a 293 Tuesday, HPU finished with a three-round score of 910.

“I am extremely proud of the way the girls didn’t give up today and the level of mental toughness they displayed,” HPU head coach Alexis Bennett said. “Today may have been a school record, but it’s very much the type of golf we are capable of day in and day out. We don’t have depth, but different players are constantly stepping up.”

Freshman Samantha Vodry shot 3-under 69, just one shot off the school record for low round. Vodry recorded seven birdies, including three in a row at No. 6-7-8. She finished the tournament tied for 48th at 9-over.

“I’m incredibly happy for Sam,” Bennett said. “She’s an extremely hard worker and watching her get into and stay in the zone today was so much fun. She’s in for a great Spring.”

Fellow freshman Tonrak Tasaso also shot under par for the round at 1-under 71 with three birdies to finish in a team-best tied for 31st at 5-over.

Junior Cayla Smith shot 3-over 75 to finish the tournament tied for 40th at 8-over. Senior Danielle Fuss and sophomore Devi Meyers shot 6-over and 10-over to finish 24-over and 35-over for the tournament, respectively.

High Point finished second amongst five Big South schools.

Next up, the Panthers compete in the Bulldog Florida Invitational at the Windsor Parke Golf Club March 7-8 in Jacksonville, Fla.
