College Baseball Final – Averett 3, Guilford 0

DANVILLE, Va. – Averett University’s Dillon Roberts gave up only one hit in five innings as Guilford College dropped a Thursday afternoon contest to Averett University, 3-0.

Tyler Fetherolf represented the first hit of the contest in the bottom of the second inning as he doubled down the left field line after the Cougars moved runners around the bases, driving in the game’s first run. A Chase McKinney double sparked a two-run rally one inning later as A.J. Hart grounded into a fielder’s choice, but ultimately driving home two runs off of a throwing error.

Guilford’s bats awakened in the next half inning as Josh Shepherd led off with a single. The Quakers later placed runners in scoring position with no outs, adding one more runner after a Joe Metts one-out walk to load the bases. The Cougars rallied with two pop flies to end the inning. The Quakers produced one more opportunity with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth frame after Stewart Laws responded to consecutive strikeouts before his at-bat by drawing a walk. Averett switched pitchers and retired the side in the next at-bat.

Metts led the Quakers with a one-for-three afternoon, tallying a double. Logan Washle also added a one-for-three effort while Rocco Wilcox was the lone Quakers player to reach base twice, drawing two walks.

McKinney led Averett with a two-for-three effort, drawing doubles on both hits to represent two of Averett’s four extra-base hits on the afternoon.

Ty Walser (1-1) claimed the loss for the Quakers on an afternoon where Guilford threw six pitchers. Walser struck out two and walked one in two innings while Logan Jones struck out three in his two-inning effort, following Walser in the fourth and fifth innings.

Roberts (1-0) struck out two and walked two in his five-inning start for Averett.

The Quakers begin Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Saturday, traveling to Lynchburg College for a 1 p.m. contest.
