Charlotte Edges Elon Men’s Tennis 4-3

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University men’s tennis team fell just short in its comeback attempt Friday afternoon, dropping a 4-3 decision to Charlotte at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

RESULTS

The Phoenix faced a 3-2 deficit when the final two singles matches went to a deciding third set. Salvador Mijares was able to tie the match 3-3 before Charlotte’s Alex Garcia finished off Felipe Osses-Konig to clinch the win for the 49ers.

Elon falls to 6-9 with the loss and Charlotte improves to 9-6.

The Rundown
The Phoenix and 49ers played a tight doubles point that came down to a tiebreaker. Mijares and Neal Port got things started with a 7-5 victory on court No. 3. The duo trailed 4-3 and battled back to earn their sixth straight win.

Taylor Foote and Felipe Sarrasague went to a tiebreaker against Garcia and Oriol Puig tied 6-6, but fell 7-0. That left the doubles point to be decided on court No. 1, where Petar Tomic and Chris Humphreys lost an 8-6 tiebreaker, giving Charlotte a 1-0 heading into singles.

Elon jumped out to a 2-1 lead after quick singles wins by Sarrasague and Jacob Bicknell. Sarrasague beat Sam Rice 6-1, 6-0 on the top court and Bicknell followed with a 6-4, 6-0 win on court No. 6.

The 49ers won the next two matches on court Nos. 3 and 5 to take a 3-2 lead.

Mijares knotted the match at 3-3 after completing a 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 comeback victory over Charlotte’s Constandinos Christoforou. Garcia’s three-set victory against Osses-Konig clinched the deciding fourth point for the 49ers.

Notes
– Neal Port and Salvador Mijares’ 7-5 victory at No. 3 doubles marked the duo’s sixth straight. The pairing is now 7-2 on the season.
– Felipe Sarrasague has won three straight matches at No. 1 singles. The sophomore’s 10 singles wins are tops on the team.

With severe weather in the forecast for the region, Elon’s match Sunday, March 12, against Georgia State has been cancelled and will not be made up. Elon’s next match will be Thursday, March 16, at 2:30 p.m. against College of Charleston.
