Elon’s Ramirez Named CAA WLAX Defensive Player of the Week

RICHMOND, Va. – Elon University women’s lacrosse goalie Rachel Ramirez has been named CAA Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon.

The honor is the senior’s first of the season and third of her career with all of them coming over the course of the last two seasons. Ramirez made 13 saves last Wednesday, March 8, in a 12-9 victory over Vanderbilt at Rudd Field. She also picked up three ground balls and had two caused turnovers in the winning effort.

Ramirez’s 13-save performance is the second highest save total in a game this season. Earlier this year, Ramirez made a season-high 15 saves against High Point.

This marks the fourth weekly CAA honor of the season for the Phoenix. Stephanie Asher has twice won Player of the Week this year and Alexis Zadjura earned Defensive Player of the Week back on Feb. 14.

The Phoenix returns to action Tuesday, March 14, at 6 p.m. when it hits the road to take on defending national champion and second-ranked North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Elon moved up to No. 14 this week in the Cascade/Inside Lacrosse Media poll and checked in for the first time in program history at No. 19 in the IWLCA Coaches poll.
