GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore Amanda Dionne (Nashua, N.H./Tabor Academy (Mass.) matched her career high with six goals in Guilford College’s 13-6 lacrosse win over visiting Southwestern (Texas) University Friday afternoon.
The contest marked the return of former Quakers’ head coach Matthew Grosso, who left Guilford after eight seasons to start the Southwestern program in 2012.
Dionne scored three times during a 7-1 Quakers’ run to start the game. Demming Carlow tallied twice and added an assist during the spurt, which sparked Guilford to a 7-2 halftime lead. The Quakers held a 16-5 edge in shots and held the Pirates to eight clears in 16 attempts during the first half.
Southwestern settled a bit in the second half as Kate Davis netted two of her team-leading three scores during a 4-1 Pirates’ burst. Her third and final score brought Southwestern to within 11-6, but Dionne and teammate Holly Kozak (Portsmouth, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) closed out the scoring to secure Guilford’s first win of the season.
Dionne scored six goals on seven shots and also collected a game- and career-high eight draw controls. Kozak finished with a career-high five points on a personal-best three goals and two assists. Carlow finished with two goals and two assists. Madison Iandoli also scored twice. Summer Fowler tallied a career-high three assists, plus five ground balls and two draw controls. Sammi Milbourn went the distance in goal and made three saves.
Davis’ three goals led the Pirates. She also picked up five ground balls, caused three turnovers and had three ground balls. Christina Rosendahl didn’t score, but contributed seven ground balls, five draws and three caused turnovers, all game highs. Southwestern’s Emma Albin had a goal and six ground balls. Goalie Jordan Little made 10 saves.
