College Men’s Lacrosse Final – Guilford 9, Methodist 5

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Nick Damiano (Greensboro, N.C./Western Guilford) and Aaron Parrish (Kernersville, N.C./East Forsyth) both scored twice in Guilford College’s 9-5 lacrosse win over visiting Methodist University Friday night in the Armfield Athleic Center. Brennan Sweeney added a goal and two assists for the Quakers (4-3), who ended the Monarchs’ (7-2) seven-game winning streak.

Damiano scored twice and Parrish once during a 4-1 Guilford run to open the fourth quarter, which helped the Quakers open up a close game throughout. Neither team led by more than two goals as both goalies delivered strong play behind solid defenses. Parrish started the spurt with a blast from 18 yards away that beat Monarchs’ keeper Andrew Bingham. The Quakers won the ensuing face-off and 77 seconds later Sweeney took a feed from Zach Berkowitz and dent the twine with a bounce shot from 20 yards out. Aswan Bland sent a nice feed to Damiano a minute later and the senior beat Bingham from seven yards out to give Guilford an insurmountable 8-3 lead with 9:23 remaining.

Methodist entered the game ranked 13th nationally with a 14.75 goals per game average, but the Quakers held them to nearly a third of their season average. Goalie Parker Styles stood tall with 10 saves, five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Methodist’s Jake Smerka came into the contest averaging over three tallies per tilt, but netted only one Friday thanks to the efforts of senior Erik Fries (2 ground balls, 2 caused turnovers) and juniors Will Forrestal (1 goal, 2 ground balls, 3 caused turnovers) and Matt Bowen (3 ground balls, 1 caused turnover). Guilford outshot the Monarchs, 45-33, and limited the Monarchs to 16 successful clears in 24 attempts.

Jay Robinson and Andrew Ruskey both scored a goal and an assist to pace Methodist’s offense with two points apiece. Bingham made 11 saves in goal with five ground balls. Matt DeSalvo and Trent Diaz helped Methodist win 10-of-18 face-offs.
