Track and Field: HPU Finishes Bob Davidson Spring Kick-Off

Mens’s Results follows Women’s Results
Collin Wins 800m on Last Day of Davidson Kick-Off

HIGH POINT, N.C.— The High Point University women’s track and field finished action at the Bob Davidson Spring Kick-Off Saturday (March 18) at Vert Stadium.

“Today was a very good day for our women,” HPU head coach Mike Esposito said. “Jamey (Schnuck) and Makenzi (Holmes-DiGiovine) were close to or broke personal bests for their openers in the hammer and Ariel (Wilbekin) had a great series in the triple jump and a solid day on the track in the 200.

“Cozette (Collin) won a tactical 800, but the purpose of a race is to win it and she did just that. Cory (Wilson) had a big PR in the 800 and continues to get better. Keaton (Case) had a great leg in the 4x400m relay and Emmy (Geis) opened in the 400m hurdles with a time just off her personal best.”

Senior Cozette Collin won the 800 meters in a time of 2:14.53 and was the runner-up in the 3,000 meters in 10:21.69.

In the hammer throw, senior Jamie Schnuck was fourth with a heave of 52.89m (173-6), while junior Makenzi Holmes-DiGiovine set a PR of 48.50m (159-1) to finish 13th.

Freshman Ariel Wilbekin finaled and placed seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 11.45m (37-6.75).

In the 400m hurdles, sophomore Emmy Geis finished eighth in 1:03.80, while sophomore Jasmyn Gillespie was 11th in 1:07.61.

“I would like to thank our support groups, including marketing, sports information, athletic training, facilities, the many volunteer groups and especially my coaching staff,” Esposito said. “Hosting a track meet involves many moving parts and we are very blessed at HPU to have such a team-oriented approach.

“The VertKlasse Meeting will be an even larger, more highly competitive and challenging meet to host.”

The Panthers return to action next weekend for the Raleigh Relays March 24-25 in Raleigh, N.C.

HPU Men Conclude Bob Davidson Spring Kick-Off

HIGH POINT, N.C.—The High Point University men’s track and field finished action at the Bob Davidson Spring Kick-Off Saturday (March 18) at Vert Stadium.

“We had beautiful weather and competed at home, but had below average results for our men,” HPU head coach Mike Esposito said. “Our guys seemed less at ease on the facilities that they train on every day. It was very puzzling, but in two weeks at the VertKlasse, I can assure you there will be a more prepared group of young men.

“Britton (Mann) was solid in the discus and Sam (Thomas) and Pablo (Romero Gonzales) ran excellent legs in the 4x400m relay. Though the times were not very impressive, we did take second and third in the 3,000 meters. Nick (Williams competed very well in the 800.”

In the 3,000 meters, sophomore Alejandro Juan Torres crossed the line second in 8:35.35, while senior Vinny Todaro was third in 8:40.22.

Junior James House finished 10th in the 200 meters in 22.21.

In the discus, sophomore Britton Mann placed 10th with a throw of 43.20m (141-9).

“I would like to thank our support groups, including marketing, sports information, athletic training, facilities, the many volunteer groups and especially my coaching staff,” Esposito said. “Hosting a track meet involves many moving parts and we are very blessed at HPU to have such a team-oriented approach.
