HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University men’s lacrosse team dropped a home contest to No. 12 Richmond, 12-4, on Saturday in Vert Stadium.

The Spiders (8-1, 3-0) opened the game with back-to-back goals before the Panthers (3-6, 1-1) answered with a 2-0 spurt to even the score at 2-all after one. However, the visitors scored the next eight goals over the next two-plus quarters to build a lead and cruise to victory.

“I’m disappointed in our effort today and I don’t think we had anyone step up when we needed it,” head coach Jon Torpey said. “We challenged them to be emotionally drained afterwards and we didn’t play with the sense of urgency that we needed. I felt like we played a pretty good first quarter. But we didn’t fully listen on the sidelines and had guys go out and repeat mistakes and you can’t do that against a good and well-coached team like Richmond.”

Offensively, junior Chris Young led the Purple & White. The Canadian’s two goals on the day made him the second HPU player to reach double digits in goals this season. Meanwhile, junior Jason Ashwood notched a goal to extend his team-best scoring streak to nine games.

In the cage, sophomore Tim Troutner Jr. racked up 11 saves, four ground balls and three caused turnovers for High Point. Similarly, senior Tanner Landstra picked up two ground balls and added a caused turnover.

Rounding out the offensive output, sophomore Griff Caligiuri posted a goal while junior Peyton Garrett and senior Nick Basile were credited with assists.

Richmond’s nation-leading defense limited HPU to 15 shots on goal and forced 16 High Point turnovers. On the ground, the Spiders posted a 30-24 edge and fired 34 shots while the Panthers were held to 23 attempts on the afternoon.

At the face-off ‘X,’ sophomore Brandon Savoie tallied seven wins and four ground balls. Likewise, Garrett and sophomore Ryan McLaughlin picked up two ground balls apiece.

The Spiders jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first before Young and Ashwood notched goals to even the score through one quarter. However, Richmond responded with a 5-0 run through the second to take a 7-2 advantage into halftime.

From there, Richmond extended its lead to 10-2 with 9:04 to play. Despite another goal by Young and a man-down tally from Caligiuri, the Spiders were able to take home a 12-4 victory.

The Panthers are back on the road next week to take on Mercer in Macon, Ga. on Saturday, April 1 at 1 p.m.
