Elon Baseball Shuts Out Northeastern to Win Series

ELON, N.C. – More late-inning heroics turned a scoreless game in to a 6-0 conference victory for the Elon University baseball team on Sunday afternoon at Latham Park. The win gave the Phoenix the series win over the visiting Northeastern Huskies.

Box Score | Play-by-Play

For Elon (11-13, 2-1 CAA), Joe Satterfield hit the go-ahead home run during a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Hayden Platt was 1-for-1 with a grand slam to provide some insurance.

Northeastern (8-13, 1-2 CAA) managed just four hits on the day as the Huskies were shut out for the first time this season.

Derek Pike (1-1) earned the win in relief for the Phoenix. Pike struck out one and allowed one hit in two-thirds of an inning. Elon starter Kyle Brnovich went 6.2 scoreless frames, scattering three hits and striking out six. Danny Crowe tossed the final 1.2 innings, striking out two, to pick up his third save of the year.

The loss went to Northeastern reliever Brian Rodriguez (2-1) who had not allowed an earned run in his previous nine outings. Rodriguez gave up one run on three hits in 1.2 innings. Starter Brian Christian walked six, but did not surrender a run in 5.0 innings.

How It Happened: With the game scoreless in the last of the seventh inning, Satterfield led off the frame by lining the very first pitch over the right field wall to give the Phoenix a 1-0 lead.

Elon would build on that advantage in the eighth, scoring five runs on three hits. The inning began with Will Nance lacing a double to the left field corner. After pinch-runner Tyler Stanley moved to third on a fly out, Cam Devanney delivered the second run of the game with a double down the right field line. Following a pair of walks, Platt stood in for his first plate appearance of the game and belted a 3-2 pitch deep over the high wall in left to cap the scoring effort.

Northeastern’s best chance to score came in the third when the Huskies had the bases loaded, but Brnovich recorded the final out on a comebacker to the mound.

Notes: Ryne Ogren extended his hitting streak to a career-best 12 games… During his streak, Ogren has gone 23-for-50 (.460)… Elon recorded its third shutout of the season, the most since blanking seven opponents in 2011… The Phoenix is now 9-0 when leading after seven innings and 10-0 when leading after eight innings on the year… This game ended Elon’s 11-game homestand.

On Deck: Elon will hit the road for a Tuesday evening contest at High Point. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
