Elon Track & Field Phoenix Ready for Weekend at VertKlasse Meeting

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s track and field team is set for another trip to High Point University this outdoor season as the Phoenix heads to the VertKlasse Meeting on March 31-April 1 at the Vert Track, Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium. The meet will feature over 1,500 athletes from 47 schools.

Elon Preliminaries
• Elon is scheduled to have 23 of its student-athletes on the women’s track and field team compete this weekend. The Phoenix will also have select members of men’s cross country team also race at the meet.
• After two meets this outdoor season, the Phoenix has three athletes that are ranked first in their respective events on the Colonial Athletic Association standings in Carrie Abraham (triple jump), Bryanna Hames (discus and shot put) and Kimberly Johansen (1,500-meters). Additionally, Elon has 13 other athletes that are among the top-five in the CAA rankings.
• Last season at the VertKlasse Meeting, the Phoenix had several performers produce new personal and then school-records. Brigid Brennan ran a time of 4:36.22 in the 1,500-meter to finish third in the race while Hames won the discus throw with a heave of 50.27m, a then school-record.
• Speaking of Hames, the junior garnered her second straight CAA Co-Field Athlete of the Week award on Tuesday, March 28. The Charlotte, N.C., native earned her second league weekly honor after an impressive outing at the Raleigh Relays last weekend.
• While majority of the team will compete at the VertKlasse Meeting, Johansen will be the lone competitor at the Pepsi Florida Relays meet at the University of Florida this weekend. Johansen will race in the 1,500-meters.

Last Time Out Highlights
• Elon competed at the Raleigh Relays last Friday and Saturday, March 24-25, for its second meet of the outdoor season. Nearly 2,500 participants and 100 NCAA programs took part in the prestigious event at NC State.
• Hames was the runner-up in the discus throw after the Charlotte, N.C., native had a toss of 170′ 3″ (51.91m) in the event. Bre’anna Warren was 12th with a toss of 148′ 0″ (45.13m) while freshman Skylar Barthelmes had a mark of 134′ 10″ (41.10m).
• Hames nearly tied her career-best and school-record mark in the shot put with her throw of 47′ 5.25″ (14.46m). She was ninth in the event while Warren was 15th with a heave of 46′ 1.25″ (14.05m).
• Johansen earned a top-five finish in the 1,500-meter run after clocking a time of 4:23.05 in the race. The Chelmsford, England, native was just shy of her personal and school-record mark of 4:22.82 in the race. Freshman Melissa Anastasakis ran a time of 4:40.96 while teammate Brigid Brennan crossed the line with her time of 4:48.25.
• Briana O’Grady set a new personal-best with a toss of 167′ 0″ (50.91m) in the hammer throw. She finished 14th overall in the event for the Phoenix with the third-best performance in school history.
• Another personal-record was set in the triple jump as senior Carrie Abraham set a new mark in the event. Abraham finished fourth overall with a leap of 40′ 4.25″ (12.30m) as Elon’s top athlete in the event.
• Rookie Skylar Barthelmes earned a top-10 standing in the javelin throw for the maroon and gold. The Dartmouth, Mass., native had a throw of 127′ 5″ (38.85m) in the event, the third-best in school history.
