College Track and Field Results – Quakers Compete at High Point’s VertKlasse Meeting

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Guilford College’s Sommer Fanney (Burlington, N.C./Williams) and Jeremiah Hedrick (Sedalia, N.C./Southern Guilford) led the Quakers to their best finishes at Friday and Saturday’s VertKlasse Meeting, hosted by High Point University. The diverse field featured athletes from all NCAA divisions, including members of the Power Five conferences and Guilford’s fellow Old Dominion Athletic Conference members.

Fanney posted the school’s third-best finish in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 5:07.47. Among stiff competition, Fanney claimed the fourth-best Division III time in the field.

A’lexus Newkirk led the women’s sprinters with the fifth-best 200 meter dash time in school history, finishing at 28.75 seconds. The time was just .03 seconds behind the fourth spot in school history and claimed the fourth-best finish among Division III athletes.

Amy Steller (Advance, N.C./Davie) posted the school’s sixth-best finish in the 400 meter dash, posting a time of 1:06.07. The time was good for the fourth-best Division III time in the field. She now holds seven of the top-eight times in school history.

Hedrick led the men with the best finish among the men, placing third among Division III schools in the triple jump with a mark of 12.28 meters. Hedrick just beat out teammate Dwayne Duncan, who held the next spot at 12.20 meters.

Josephus Mitchell (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) led the sprinters with the fourth-best 100 meter dash time at 11.64 seconds. Mitchell was among a pack of runners within .1 seconds of each other in the overall field.

Jonny Sumner earned a seventh-place finish among Division III athletes in the 400 meter dash with a time of 53.99 seconds.

The Quakers rest for a week before returning to the track Friday, April 14-15 at the near-by Aggie Invitational at North Carolina A&T.
