Elon’s Jackson, Brnovich Take CAA Baseball Honors

RICHMOND, Va. – The Elon duo of outfielder Kyle Jackson and pitcher Kyle Brnovich nearly made it a clean sweep of the weekly Colonial Athletic Association baseball awards on Monday. Jackson was selected as the CAA’s player of the week, while Brnovich was named the co-pitcher of the week and rookie of the week.

Jackson led the Phoenix to a 4-0 week after batting .467 (7-for-15) with two doubles, four home runs, six runs scored and 14 RBI. The senior from Atlanta, Ga., went deep twice and drove in a season-best five runs in Tuesday’s win over High Point. He then homered and drove in four as the Phoenix beat James Madison, 7-1, on Friday. Jackson followed that up by smacking the first grand slam of his Elon career in Saturday’s 9-2 triumph over the Dukes. On the week, Jackson slugged 1.400 and had a .579 on-base percentage. He also stole one base and recorded two outfield assists. Jackson has hits in eight of his last 10 games and has reached base safely in 13 consecutive contests.

On the year, Jackson is hitting .333 (35-for-105) with 20 runs score. He is tied for the team lead with 12 doubles and paces the maroon and gold with eight homers and 30 RBI.

Brnovich, a native of Milton, Ga., threw a complete-game, two-hit shutout as Elon blanked James Madison, 3-0, on Sunday to complete a three-game series sweep. It was the first career complete game for the freshman righty who carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning. Brnovich struck out six, his fifth straight game with at least six strikeouts.

Brnovich (2-2) leads the CAA in opponent’s batting average (.173) and ranks second in ERA (2.50) on the year. In 39.2 innings, Brnovich has struck out 44 hitters.

The Phoenix will be back in action for a pair of midweek games against #17 Wake Forest this week. Elon travels to Winston-Salem, N.C., to face the Deacons at 6 p.m. on Tuesday before hosting Wake at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
