College Men’s Lacrosse Final – Guilford 9, Ferrum 6

FERRUM, Va. – Zach Berkowitz scored three goals and an assist in Guilford College’s 9-6 nonconference lacrosse win at Ferrum College Wednesday afternoon. The Quakers’ sophomore matched his goal-scoring output of the previous seven games combined to help Guilford (5-6) snap a three-game losing skid.

Berkowitz scored twice in the first half, which helped Guilford to a 6-2 edge at intermission. Berkowitz’s second goal came at the 3:50 mark of the second quarter and capped a 3-0 Quakers’ spurt.

Guilford’s Aswan Bland opened the scoring 30 seconds into the match and also started the second-half scoring with a man-up goal at the 10:14 mark the of third quarter. Zack Capwell assisted the score, which put Guilford in front, 7-2.

The teams traded tallies two-and-a minutes apart in the middle of the third and Guilford entered the final quarter with an 8-3 lead. Ferrum’s Chase Kipke assisted on Ryan Tesler’s second goal of the game with 9:51 left and netted one of his own 70 seconds later. Josh Brent’s unassisted goal with 4:09 left rallied the Panthers to within 8-6.
Ferrum won the ensuing face-off and soon thereafter found itself with a two-man advantage for two minutes as two Quakers were sent off for illegal body checks. Guilford’s man-down unit yielded only two errant shots and successfully killed off all six Ferrum power-plays, five in the second half. Berkowitz added an insurance goal with 1:26 remaining off a Brennan Sweeney assist.

Berkowitz’s four points paced Guilford’s offense. Bland finished with three markers on two goals and an assist. Parker Styles was solid in goal with 14 saves, three ground balls and a caused turnovers. Alex Ramey won 50 percent of his face-offs.

Tesler’s two goals led Ferrum (5-9), which had five different goal scorers. Kipke added one goal and an assist. Andrew Gillespie picked up a game-high six ground balls for the Panthers. Goalie Koby McMahon made 14 stops and had four ground balls.

Coach Tom Carmean’s Quakers return home Saturday to resume Old Dominion Athletic Conference play against Bridgewater College at 1:00 p.m.
