Elon Baseball’s Streak Snapped by #17 Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Elon University baseball team saw its season-best six-game winning streak halted by 17th-ranked Wake Forest as the Phoenix fell by a 14-1 margin at David Couch Ballpark on Tuesday night.

Box Score | Play-by-Play

Elon (15-14) was limited to just four hits on the night, two by Ty Adcock who hit the first home run of his career.

For Wake Forest (22-8), Nick DiPonzio hit a pair of homers and drove in five runs off the bench, while Johnny Aiello drove in four with a 2-for-5 day.

Making the first start of his career, Elon’s Owen Lorenz (0-1) took the loss. He allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits in 2.1 innings.

Drew Loepprich (2-2) picked up the win after giving up one run on four hits in 5.0 innings.

How It Happened: After working out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the first, Elon was able to score the game’s first run when Adcock hit a 1-2 pitch deep over the right field fence to give the Phoenix a 1-0 lead.

Wake Forest got on the board in the third inning. Jake Mueller began the inning with a single up the middle and headed to third on Stuart Fairchild’s double down the leftfield line. Gavin Sheets’ ground out to first plated Mueller to tie the score. After a walk, Johnny Aiello’s 10th home run of the year gave the Deacons a 4-1 lead. With the bases full following an error and single, Jonathan Pryor drove in two more with a single up the middle as Wake grabbed a five-run cushion.

The Deacs would put up eight more in the seventh, including four on DiPonzio’s grand slam.

Notes: Elon was just 1-for-12 with runners on base and 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.

On Deck: Elon and the Deacs will play the second part of the home-and-home set at Elon’s Latham Park on Wednesday, April 5, at 6 p.m.
