Elon Track and Field Heads South to Tiger Track Classic

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s track and field team travels south to Alabama as the Phoenix preps to compete at the Tiger Track Classic, hosted by Auburn University. The two-day meet begins on Friday, April 7, with events kicking off at 2 p.m. at the Hutsell-Rosen Track.

Elon Preliminaries
• The Phoenix is slated to have 20 of its athletes in action this weekend as the maroon and gold competes at the Auburn meet for the first time.
• On the latest Colonial Athletic Association outdoor rankings, three Phoenix athletes currently lead their respective events in Carrie Abraham (triple jump), Bryanna Hames (discus and shotput) and Kimberly Johansen (1,500-meters).
• Overall, 15 Phoenix tracksters are among the top-five in the league rankings in their respective events.
• Johansen competed last weekend at the Florida Relays in the 1,500-meters. The Chelmsford, England, native clocked a time of 4:23.75 in the event, nearly matching her outdoor season-best of 4:23.05 that she set at the Raleigh Relays. She finished in the top-10 in the highly competitive event.

Last Time Out Highlights
• Elon competed last weekend, March 31-April 1, at the VertKlasse Meeting at High Point University.
• Hames won the discus title at the meet with her throw of 166′ 11″ (50.88m). Warren was third overall in the event as the Greensboro, N.C., native had a throw of 153′ 6″ (46.79m).
• O’Grady had a throw of 164′ 2″ (50.05m) in the hammer throw for the Phoenix, almost matching her personal-best of 50.91m. She finished 12th overall in the event.
• Abraham finished third in the triple jump with a leap of 39′ 6″ (12.04m). Jayna Coyle finished in the top-10 with her jump of 37′ 3.75″ (11.37m).
• Sophomore Chelsea Smith was Elon’s top finisher in the 1,500-meter run at 12th with a time of 4:41.11. In the 5,000-meter race, rookie Sophia Tasselmyer earned a top-five standing in the event with a time of 17:44.66.
• Ellie Bennett and Nicole Karabas both had cleared heights of 10′ 8″ (3.25m) in the pole vault with Karabas tying her personal-best. Bennett finished eighth overall while Karabas was 10th after needing more attempts to clear.
• In the shot put, Warren finished third with a toss of 44′ 11.75″ (13.71m). Hames was next at fourth with her heave of 43′ 9.25″ (13.34m).

Elon hosts its lone home meet of the season with the Phoenix Invitational next Saturday, April 15, at the Jerry and Jeanne Robertson Track Complex.
