HPU baseball pounces on Camels in series opener, 10-4

• High Point picked up a 10-4 win over Campbell on Friday at Williard Stadium to open the weekend series with the Camels.
• Sophomore Andrew Gottfried struck out seven in 5-2/3 innings on the way to his second win of the season.
• Senior Josh Greene was one of four HPU players to record multiple hits, finishing 2-4 with a home run and three runs scored.

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University baseball team opened the weekend with a 10-4 win over Campbell on Friday night at Williard Stadium. Eight different Panthers got a hit, including senior Josh Greene who went 2-4 with a home run.

“This game set a great tone for the weekend,” head coach Craig Cozart said. “We played errorless baseball, got great production from the middle of our order and strong pitching from Andrew Gottfried and Matt Hodges. This win was a great way to start the weekend and hopefully we come out tomorrow with the same intent.”

Sophomore Andrew Gottfried improved to 2-2 on the season with the win for the Panthers. The right-hander lasted 5-2/3 innings and allowed four runs, three earned, on four hits and a walk while striking out seven. Sophomore Matt Hodges pitched the final 3-1/3 innings and struck out four to earn his second save of the season.

Allan Winans took the loss for Campbell, dropping to 2-4 for the season. Winans allowed five runs, four earned on seven hits and a walk in 2-2/3 innings of work.

The win is the Panthers fifth in the past six games and it improved HPU’s record to 15-14 overall and 4-6 in the Big South. Campbell drops to 15-15 overall and 4-3 in conference play.

High Point took an early lead, scoring a run in each of the first two innings to go ahead 2-0. Greene hit a solo home run, his fourth of the season, in the first inning then junior Spencer Brown scored on a passed ball after doubling in the second.

The Panthers tacked on three runs in the third and another two in the fourth to extend the lead to 7-0. Junior Austen Zente scored the first run in the third on a throwing error then junior Blake Schunk drove in two with an RBI double to the wall in right-center. In the following inning, junior Carson Jackson went the other way for a two-run double scoring both redshirt-senior Tim Mansfield and Greene.

High Point scored an eighth run in the fifth on an RBI single by junior Jordan Sergent before Campbell got on the board with four runs in the next half inning.

HPU added some extra breathing room in the eighth inning when Lee hit a two-run home run, his fourth of the season. The second baseman turned on a 3-1 pitch and hit a high shot over the wall in right to push the lead to 10-4.

Greene finished 2-4 with a home run and three runs scored. He was one of four different Panthers with multiple hits as Jackson went 2-5 with two RBI and a run scored, Brown finished 2-5 with a run scored and Sergent went 2-4 with an RBI.

High Point and Campbell continue their three-game series on Saturday, April 8, at Williard Stadium. First pitch in the contest is at 2 p.m.
