Elon Track and Field to Host the Phoenix Invitational on Saturday

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s track and field team is set to host its annual home meet, the Phoenix Invitational on Saturday, April 15. The maroon and gold is scheduled to welcome six collegiate programs to the meet at the Jerry and Jeanne Robertson Track and Field Complex with events scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.

Elon Preliminaries
• The Phoenix is scheduled to have all but eight of its athletes on its track and field roster compete on Saturday at its home track.
• Elon will honor its five seniors on the women’s track and field team in Carrie Abraham, Jayna Coyle, Shelby Cuddeback, Kimberly Johansen and Briana O’Grady. The program will also have a senior recognition for Carlos Andino of the Elon men’s cross country team.
• Heading into the weekend, Elon has three athletes that sit atop of their respective event in the Colonial Athletic Association rankings. Johansen holds the best times in both the 800 and 1,500-meters while Abraham has the best mark in the triple. Bryanna Hames is at the top of the league’s performance list in the shot put and discus.
• Additionally, the Phoenix has 16 athletes that sit among the top-five of their respective events in the CAA standings.
• This is the third straight year that Elon has hosted a home meet at its facility, the Jerry and Jeanne Robertson Track and Field Complex. Prior to that, the Phoenix went nearly eight years without hosting a meet.
• If the season were to end today, the Phoenix would have four athletes that would qualify for the NCAA East Preliminaries, which will be hosted in Lexington, Ky. Hames is the Phoenix’s highest ranked athlete as she sits 17th in the discus in the region.

Last Time Out Highlights
• Last Friday and Saturday, April 7-8, Elon competed at the Tiger Track Classic at Auburn University.
• Johansen broke her own school-record in the 800-meters as the Chelmsford, England, native ran a time of 2:08.41 in the race and finished second overall.
• Bre’anna Warren earned a first-place finish in the discus, setting a new career-best throw of 166’2″ (50.65m).
• Corey Weiss placed first in the 3,000m steeplechase with a new personal-best time. She crossed the finish line at 10:59.95, which is the fifth-best time in program history.
• Coralea Geraniotis blazed to a new personal-best and a top-five performance list time of 9:59.77 in the 3,000m run. Her time is ranked second in program history and is just over five seconds away from the school-record time of 9:54.75.
• Ellie Bennett also set a personal record in the pole vault clearing 11’3.75″ (3.45m) and placing 11th overall. Her mark is third on the program’s all-time performance list.
• Skylar Barthelmes set a new personal record in the javelin and placed third overall at the meet. Her new personal best of 136’1″ (41.49m) also ranks second on the program’s all-time performance list.

The Phoenix is back in competition next weekend for its final tune-up before the CAA Championships at the Duke Invitational on April 21-22.
