LYNCHBURG, Va. – Tate Godwin and Mesa Martorell teamed for victory at first doubles in Guilford College’s 7-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men’s tennis victory at Randolph College Saturday. Godwin won at first singles and Martorell pulled out the number-two singles tilt as the Quakers (9-5, 7-2 ODAC) won their third straight match.
Godwin and Martorell opened with an 8-2 first-doubles win over Bradley Strober and Doug Corbett. The Quakers also claimed the third-doubles contest as Levi Bruff and Aaron Smedley took down the WildCats’ Trevor Johnson and Tuan Tran, 8-5. JT von Seggern and Kyle Unruh were 8-5 winners over the Quakers’ Graham Pearson and Chasen Chacon, which put Randolph on the board.
Godwin made quick work of Strober at first singles, 6-0, 6-2, and Bruff handled Tuan and fifth singles, 6-1, 6-2. Martorell needed three sets to topple von Seggern at second singles, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.
Johnson beat Smedley, 6-3, 6-1, at third singles for the WildCats’ (8-5, 4-4 ODAC) lone singles point.
Coach Dave McCain’s Quakers close the regular season next Sunday (4/23) with an ODAC contest against visiting Virginia Wesleyan College at 2:00 p.m.
