Stellar Weekend Leads Ramirez to CAA WLAX Defensive Player of the Week Award

RICHMOND, Va. – Elon University women’s lacrosse goalie Rachel Ramirez has been tabbed the CAA Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after making 25 save and allowing just five goals in two conference wins over the weekend.

On Friday against Drexel, Ramirez led the Elon defense to a big 15-2 win over the Dragons at Rudd Field and set the program’s new record for fewest goals allowed in a game. The senior from Lindenhurst, N.Y., made 10 saves and had two ground balls and two caused turnovers. In Sunday’s 6-3 win over Delaware, Ramirez tied her season high with 15 saves while picking up three ground balls with no turnovers. Her 15-save afternoon marked the second time this season she’s reached the number, but it also tied for the most saves in team history against a conference opponent.

Overall, Ramirez finished the weekend with a 2.17 goals against average, a save percentage of 83.3 and averaged 12.5 saves per game. Along the way, she and the Elon defense went 41:41 between goals allowed with Drexel’s last tally Friday coming late in the first half and Delaware’s first goal being scored midway through the opening frame. In all, Elon also allowed just one second-half goal on the weekend and allowed just two goals in the run of play with the other three all coming on free position chances.

Other CAA honors on the week included Alyssa Parrella of Hofstra and Haley Warden of James Madison taking CAA Co-Player of the Week. Parrella was also named the conference’s Rookie of the Week for the fifth time this season.

Elon will be back in action on Sunday, April 23, at 12 p.m. when it hosts Hofstra on Senior Day. The game will air on Lax Sports Network, marking Elon’s first home game to air on the network.
