Winston-Salem State Rams advance in CIAA Baseball Championship

PETERBURG, VA – St. Augustine’s got on the scoreboard first in this pitcher’s duel, when in the fifth inning, Collin Pippin flied out to center field, scoring Alexis Garcia on a sacrifice fly, to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.

The Winston-Salem State Rams answered in the sixth inning, when 2017 CIAA Baseball Player of the Year, Ivan Acuna, connected on a home run to deep left field to give the Rams a 3-1 advantage. Emilio Abreu came up next and also hit a home run to center field, but Abreu missed first base when he rounded the bases, and on the appeal, was called out.

The Falcons answered with two runs in the seventh, on two hits and got help of one WSSU error to tie the game at 3-3.

WSSU broke this close game wide open in the eighth inning by scoring six runs on four hits and one St. Augustine’s error. Emilio Abreu made good on his first mistake of missing first base on his home run, by hitting a double to left center field, allowing three WSSU runners to score, Abreu would come aoeund to score on a passed ball and Landon Steiner doubled to left center, scoring Randal Ortiz. Michael McNamara singled on a bunt, scoring Landon Steiner.

Jordan Carlton would come on for the Rams and shut down the St. Augustine’s Falcons, to get he final outs, to allow WSSU to win the game, 9-3.

The WSSU Rams will face Chowan University next, once play resumes on Friday. Thursday’s final game was postponed due to inclement weather.
