LAST YEAR’S CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP
1A: Community School of Davidson sprints to a 5-1 victory over Franklin Academy
Community School of Davidson jumped on top of Franklin Academy in the opening minute as the Spartans netted a Julia Grainda header off a corner kick by Lissi Gordon to open the 1A Women’s Soccer State Championship with a bang. The Spartans found the back of the net four more times on the day, including another by Grainda, who added a pair of assists on the three other Spartan goals on her way to M.V.P. honors. The Spartans finished the season 23-0-2, winning the school’s second state championship in Women’s Soccer, and their first since a 2014 victory over East Carteret 2-1 in the final.

2A: Wojnovich sends Carrboro past Forbush 1-0 in overtime
Carrboro High School took home their second straight 2A Women’s Soccer State Championship with a 1-0 overtime victory over Forbush High School. Freshman Alexa Wojnovich sent the Jaguar faithful home happy with her 36th goal of the season on a corner kick in the first overtime. With the win, Carrboro finishes the season 2112, and they clinch their second straight 2A Women’s Soccer State Championship. The Jaguars have now won three Women’s Soccer state championships (2012, 2015, 2016) in four appearances. Alexa Wojnovich was named the Most Valuable Player of the Game after unleashing five shots on goal, including the game winning goal with 3:21 left in the first overtime.

3A: Weddington gets two first half goals to hold off Jacksonville 2-1
Two set pieces made the difference for the Weddington Warriors as Olivia Odle and Remi Roberts combined for both of the Warrior goals in the 3A State Championship game, besting a tough Jacksonville side 2-1. Weddington had most of the possession throughout the night, but it was a pair of set pieces that provided the Warrior offense on the night. The first a goal game came in the 28th minute after sustained pressure by the Warrior attack won a corner kick. Odle stepped up with her left foot and dropped a perfect ball in from the corner to Roberts, who towered over everyone, to head the ball down on the goal line and in the net making it 1-0. Some nine minutes later the Warriors won a free kick 40 yards from goal and Odle stepped up with her left foot again to drop a ball in the six-yard box to Roberts, again heading the ball to the back of the net and giving Weddington a lead they would not relinquish, securing their first title in three trips to the State Championship Game. Roberts was named the game’s M.V.P.

4A: Providence holds off Middle Creek for a 2-1 title win
Panther Creek denied Providence a 4A Women’s Soccer State Championship in 2015 as Panther Creek sped to a 2-0 win. This year’s Providence Panthers squad would not be denied as they poured on the pressure in the early part of the second half, netting two goals before holding off late-charging Middle Creek. Hard-working Mady Ellis earned a corner kick for Providence with a third speedy run down the right side. Sophomore Panther defender Mia Thillet sent in a beautiful ball from the corner to the edge of the six, and it dropped right to Molly McGarry who buried the ball in the back of the net with 31 minutes to play. McGarry’s goal, her 19th of the season, and solid midfield play earned her the game’s M.V.P. award.
