HPU baseball comes back for 6-5 win in first game of doubleheader at Radford

• High Point battled back for a 6-5 win at Radford on Saturday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader at Radford Baseball Stadium.
• The Panthers scored six unanswered runs, including the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single from junior Jordan Sergent.
• Junior Carson Jackson finished 2-4 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored for HPU.

RADFORD, Va. – Junior Jordan Sergent delivered an RBI single in the top of the ninth to complete the comeback for the High Point University baseball team as the Panthers scored six unanswered runs in 6-5 win at Radford on Saturday afternoon in Radford, Va.

High Point trailed, 5-0, after two innings but held the Highlanders without a hit the rest of the way to pick up its fifth-straight win, improving to 27-18 overall and 13-9 in the Big South. Radford dropped to 20-28 overall and 8-11 in conference play.

Senior Jeremy Johnson got the win with three perfect innings of relief, improving to 3-2 on the season. The left-hander struck out four of the nine batters he faced, including two in the bottom of the ninth.

Austin Gerber took the loss for Radford, dropping to 4-3 on the season. Gerber threw 1-2/3 innings out of the pen and allowed one unearned run while striking out one.

The hosts scored once in the first inning and four times in the second to take a 5-0 lead over the Panthers. The Highlanders had seven hits and two walks in the first two frames.

High Point trimmed the deficit to one with a four-run fourth to make the score 5-4. Senior Josh Greene drove in the first run with an RBI bloop single then junior Carson Jackson delivered a three-run home run, his seventh of the season. Jackson turned on the first pitch from Ridgely and hit a no-doubt shot over the wall in right to score both Greene and junior Blake Schunk.

Two innings later, the Panthers tied the game when Greene hit a sacrifice fly to score redshirt-senior Tim Mansfield. The score remained tied until the ninth inning when Sergent hit an RBI single back up the middle to drive in Jackson, who reached on an error to lead off the inning.

The 2-5 hitters for High Point combined to go 6-15 with five RBI and five runs scored in the contest. Jackson went 2-4 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored while Greene went 1-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

High Point and Radford continue their weekend series with the nightcap of Saturday’s doubleheader set to begin at 4:45 p.m.
