from www.uncgspartans.com:

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Caleb Webster (Randleman, N.C./Randleman) has been named the Southern Conference’s Freshman of the Year in 2017. Webster is a first team All Southern Conference selection and is joined on the first team by sophomore outfielder Andrew Moritz (Charlotte, N.C./Providence). Senior Ben Spitznagel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wabash Valley CC) and Cesar Trejo (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) earned All-SoCon second team honors.

Webster ended the season hitting .391, the highest of any freshman in the country by .017 points. The third baseman earned first team honors at his position. Earlier this season, Webster was the SoCon’s Player of the Month in March. He has played in 43 games, driven in 37 runs and leads UNCG with 13 doubles.

Centerfielder Moritz has played in a team-high 51 games this season as he earned first team honors. This is the second Southern Conference postseason honors for Moritz as he was named to the All-Freshman team in his rookie season. This year Moritz has hit at a league-best .403 average with 34 RBI and is fifth in the league with 54 runs scored. Moritz currently holds the school record with a .402 batting average. He currently leads the team with 15 stolen bases. A defensive standout, Moritz made ESPN’s Top 10 plays for a catch in early March.

Spitznagel earned his second Southern Conference second team award Monday morning. After being an All-SoCon performer at second base last season, the senior moved to the outfield where he earned the same accolade. Spitznagel finished seventh in the league with a .352 batting average serving as UNCG’s primary leadoff hitter. His .371 career average ranks third best in school history. Spitznagel has earned a .989 fielding percentage, committing just one error in 91 chances.

This is the second All-SoCon award for the sophomore designated hitter, Trejo. Trejo was a member of the All-Freshman team a year ago, as well as being named a D1baseball.com and Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American last season. This year, Trejo was the Spartans power bat, leading the team in home runs, RBI and slugging percentage. Trejo found his name in the middle of the Spartan lineup and has driven in multiple runs in 16 games, and six times has driven in three or more runs.
