Barry, Zhu lead after first-round

Two trail by one at the Haas Family Invitational presented by BB&T

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Carson Barry of Eagle, Idaho, and Alex Zhu of San Roman, California, fired opening rounds of 5-under-par 65; both are playing their first Haas Family Invitational presented by BB&T.

Barry, an Oregon State University commit, carded seven birdies during the first round. He is No. 103 in the AJGA Rankings and his best finish this season is at the 2017 AJGA Junior at Greenhorn Creek, where he finished third.

“I made the turn at 3-under and I was just feeling really good about my swing,” Barry said. “I just stayed confident about my game plan and figured I could put a low number out there. I putted really well today and that helped me a lot.”

Zhu carded four birdies during the round and one eagle on the par-5 fifth hole. He is No. T153 in the AJGA Rankings and has one top-10 finish in the 2017 season at the AJGA Junior at Greenhorn Creek.

“On the first hole I was kind of jittery and just wanted to put the ball in play, after I did that my body relaxed and I was able to focus more on my second shot which I hit to about six feet.” Zhu said about his birdie on the first hole, “After that I was just focused on being committed to my putt.”

Two players are T3 at 4-under-par 66: Trent Phillips of Inman, South Carolina, and Karl Vilips of Australia.

The 2016 champion, Eugene Hong of Orlando, Florida, sits at T8 at 1-under-par 69.

The second-round of the Haas Family Invitational presented by BB&T begins June 14 at 7 a.m. Pairings can be found at: https://www.ajga.org/microsite/index.asp?tn=2017044#R2Pairings
