Akins, 31, had been pitching for the independent league Somerset Patriots. The righty hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2011 and is merely organizational depth.
Atkins played high school baseball at Northeast Guilford High School in McLeansville, NC. He originally committed to Elon University, but was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the seventh round of the 2004 MLB Draft, 216th overall.
