Elon Women’s Soccer Suffers 2-1 Setback at UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Susannah Anderson scored for the second straight game, but the Elon University women’s soccer team suffered its first defeat of the season with a 2-1 setback against UNCG on Thursday evening, Aug. 24, at UNCG Soccer Stadium.

FINAL STATS

“It was a tough loss tonight for our team,” said head coach Chris Neal. “However, I’m not concerned because we created a lot of chances, especially in the second half. It is still early in the season, and with a few tweaks we will easily solve the issues we experienced tonight.”

Elon was the aggressor for most of the match, winning the shot battle 18-7 against UNCG in 90 minutes. However, the Phoenix was unable to recover from the Spartans’ early two-goal advantage.

The maroon and gold falls to 2-1 overall on the year with the loss and UNCG picked up its first win of the year improving to 1-2 overall.

HIGHLIGHTS
UNCG opened the scoring and took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute as Emily Jensen headed in her first goal of season off of Gabbi Charles’ corner kick.

Just over seven minutes later, Charles extended the Spartans’ lead netting her first goal of the year. Her cross from the right side managed to go untouched and found the left corner of the goal.

Anderson hit a half volley off Jenny Riemer’s corner kick in the 42nd minute for her second goal of the season, bringing Elon within a goal at halftime.
