Four Phoenix Advance in Singles on Day One of Elon Women’s Tennis Fall Invitational

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s tennis team had four Phoenix advance in singles action to highlight the first day of competition at the Elon Fall Invitational on Friday, Sept. 15, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
RESULTS

HIGHLIGHTS
Kirsten Ward, Alex Koniaev, Sofia Edo and Mia Wallace all earned spots in the quarterfinals of their respective singles flights with first round victories on Friday afternoon.

Ward won her match in the Maroon Singles flight against Marija Venta of Longwood, 6-4, 6-2, to advance to the quarterfinals. Koniaev defeated Blaine Boaz of UNCG, 6-1, 6-4, in the Gold Singles flight and Sofia Edo upended Corrine Blythe of the Spartans, 6-2, 6-3, to move into the quarterfinals of the Powell Singles flight.

Mia Wallace earned her first-career win as a Phoenix defeating Rachel Marthinsen of UNCW, 6-4, 6-1, to move on in the Phoenix Singles flight bracket.

In addition, Ward and Koniaev paired up in doubles to earn an 8-6 victory over Terunuma and Candiotto of Longwood, moving to the semifinals of the Gold Doubles flight. Maria Paraja also won her doubles match in the Phoenix Doubles flight to wrap up day one of competition.

Day two begins at 9 a.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Tennis Center with the conclusion of quarterfinal singles matches and semifinal doubles matches. The finals for singles and doubles will be played on Sunday to conclude the fall tournament.
